Sri Surinder Singh

Surinder Singh, the leading teacher of asana adjustment and instruction at Himal
Featured Teacher

Surinder Singh is probably the most famous yoga teacher in the Himalayas and entire Northern India. Surinder Singh teaches hatha yoga– a combination of yogasana, pranayama and meditation– in the atmosphere of cordiality and support. It is this atmosphere and energy, and itsvastly positive effect on practice that the master's students notice and come back for, year after year. Being a mechanical engineer by education, Surinder integrates principles of mechanical physics into his teaching practice thus turning them into biomechanics of asana alignment and adjustment as well as of yoga practice as a whole.

Sri Surinder Singh was initiated in the tradition of yoga by his teacher and guru Sri Swami Dharmananda, the then superior of Ved Niketan Asram in Rishikesh. Swami made no mistake. Today, Surinder Singh is the most popular yoga teacher in the world's capital of yoga. Thousands of yoga practitioners from all over the world call Surinder Ji their main teacher. Surinder Singh is immensely popular in Russia through his teaching at Himalayan Yoga Academy.

In his classes at the Academy, Surinder Singh teaches general yoga practice, mass adjustment in a class setting, gives workshops on asana alignment and adjustment, and tunes his students into the "real yoga" – yoga of Compassion and Action.

Testimonials for Sri Surinder Singh

I was here in March 2016 and I'm so happy about my choice.

I was actually at another school before I met Stevie from Himalayan YA. He took time to answer all my questions and explained to me in depth about what HYA had to offer. I was looking for traditional yoga with Western teachings. Himalayan gave me just that, the best of both worlds which was really important to me as I was returning to the West to teach.

I had enjoyed yoga for many years but I had the knowledge lacking from my practice. I now can say that my eyes are more open to yoga than I ever imagined plus there are many bonuses to this course.

Many courses don't give much teaching time but HYA gives an extra 40 hours to concentrate on just that. Classes such as vocal training to lean how to fill the room with a calm but assertive voice which is forgotten about on other courses. I felt confident to lead a class because of this practice. I have met many other students who had completed their YTT who didn't have the confidence to teach months after graduating. I am truly grateful for this. Be warned this course is intensive but you have a good support system around you plus fun trips to help you relax and enjoy it for what it is :)

Loved the team and grateful for all that I have taken away with me :)

Reviews by graduates

I had a wonderful experience in my 240-hr Yoga Teacher Training at HYA. I knew I wanted to study in India, and this program was recommended to me by my teacher in California and is known for being one of the most organized and holistic training programs in Rishikesh. The teaching staff is extremely qualified, including some of the top teachers in Rishikesh, and diverse, with some Russian, Western, and Indian instructors, which is definitely a benefit to a YTT. There is a strong focus is on structural alignment of the asanas and teaching practice, which was exactly what I was looking for, but also classes on pranayam, mindfulness, and meditation. Overall, my experience in this teacher training brought me closer to my true self, and HYA still holds a dear place in my heart.
